Obstetrics and Gynecology
MGH’s Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology started earning its reputation as an academic department in 1982 when it opened its teaching and residency programs. Since then, the Department has provided efficiently managed comprehensive programs to women of Beirut and greater Lebanon. Women’s health issues and needs have been addressed by dedicated specialists who have been able to prepare graduates to become expert subspecialists in the field of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
The team includes specialists in reproductive endocrinology and infertility, maternal fetal medicine, urogynecology, laparoscopic surgery, gynecologic oncology, pediatrics and adolescent gynecology. These physicians are motivated to conduct research that will promote excellence in the various fields.
The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology offers all relevant up-to-date services for women. The Department has prenatal diagnostic testing, including modalities of fetal management. It covers all obstetrical services and emergencies along with all gynecological health issues, ranging from daily outpatient needs to problematic and major gynecological issues and malignancies. Clinical and basic research, as well as lectures in specialized fields add to the motivation of our Department’s members and faculty.
In the maternity unit, pregnant women receive comprehensive, thorough and case-specific care. A dedicated team of midwives and residents provides the appropriate care, following instructions and directives of experienced obstetricians, perinatologists, and neonatologists who work closely with them to ensure the best outcome for both mother and newborn, whether pregnancies are simple or complicated. Intensive care deals with complicated and preterm deliveries. Joint meetings among members of the neonatal team are essential aspects of all work.
General Gynecological Care
The Department offers gynecological care for women in all stages of their lives, always focusing on prevention. Gynecological services include a full and comprehensive approach to management to both common and rare conditions, ranging from benign findings to complicated cancer cases.
Advanced gynecological surgical procedures for endometrial, cervical, ovarian, and vulvar cancers, along with radical surgeries, are performed and joint meetings are routinely held with the chemotherapy team and the active tumor board. Makassed General Hospital includes maternal-fetal medicine, a subspecialty of obstetrics and gynecology, where physicians with advanced training and expertise care for women with high-risk pregnancies.
Certified maternal-fetal medicine specialists have expertise across the wide range of problems that might occur during pregnancy or labor and delivery, providing advanced prenatal diagnostic studies, pre-pregnancy evaluations, first trimester screening and detailed obstetric ultrasound.
Teaching and Research
All ambulatory and inpatient high-risk obstetrical patient-care activities are under the direct supervision of a faculty member who provides a level of care which is tuned to patient acuity, complexity and/or the need for invasive or operative obstetrical procedures. Our outpatient clinical and sonographic evaluations are directly staffed during face-to-face interactions between the attending physician, resident and perinatal patient.
Residency Program at MGH
A core mission of the MGH department of OB/GYN is training of leaders in the art and practice of the fields of obstetrics and gynecology. The program trains physician leaders who provide excellent care for women by evaluating medical literature and applying up-to-date medical research to their clinical care. The residency provides four years of progressive training in obstetrics and gynecology, qualifying the residents for specialty boards.
This program offers a unique opportunity for combining the education and research aspects of university departments of obstetrics and gynecology with the outstanding clinical training and experience available at the American University of Beirut Medical Center (AUBMC), with which the MGH program is affiliated. MGH OB/GYN is also affiliated with Beirut Arab University and Université Lille, France.
